Scattered throughout downtown Milford and along the Riverwalk, you will see works of art depicting Milford’s 48-foot original “Augusta” yacht. This historic yacht was built in 1927 at the Vinyard Shipyard in Milford and has been beautifully restored by Joan and Sudler Loftland, the owners of the shipyard. Several local artists and student apprentices from the community came together for a three year long citywide art project and painted 18 custom 4ft fiberglass replica yachts to tell their own stories and themes. Each yacht on display tells a different story, embracing Milford’s history, shipbuilding past, nature, river, and art culture.
You can spot these colorful yachts near South Walnut and along the Mispillion River in downtown Milford. Some themes include underwater painting, a theatre scene, Augusta’s heritage, and a depiction of the Riverwalk in the winter to name a few. You can also see public works of art murals colorfully painted on sides of various buildings as you stroll downtown.
Make plans to take a self-guided tour along the Mispillion Riverwalk Art Stroll and shop at various art studios including Gallery 37: A Destination for Artful Living and Mispillion Art League.
