The Biggs Museum of American Art is one of Delaware’s premier museums of antiques and fine arts. The objects assembled in the museum’s 14 galleries are mainly the personal collection of Mr. Sewell C. Biggs, a native of Middletown, who has continued to collect works from Delaware and the Delaware River Valley for over 60 years. Highlights of the collection include beautiful landscape paintings, portraits, and marine scenes by famous artists such as Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Cole, and the Peale family. One gallery features paintings by Brandywine School artist Frank Schoonover. Other marvels include finely crafted furniture, silver, tall clocks, sculpture, and other decorative arts. Small changing exhibitions complement the permanent collection. Scheduled programs at the museum discuss the collection and temporary exhibitions. The museum also offers a great view of Legislative Hall, Delaware’s state capitol building, across the tree-lined open space of Legislative Mall. Group Tours
