Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The State House is located on The Green, on State Street in downtown Dover’s colonial district. Built in 1792, Delaware’s State House is the second oldest in continuous use (for ceremonial events only). This Georgian building in the heart of colonial Dover once housed both state government and Kent County offices. The restored geometrical staircase is a beautiful feature of the interior. Paintings of George Washington, Commodore Jacob Jones, and Commodore Thomas Macdonough are on display. The restored courtroom, legislative chambers and offices, plus objects, paintings, architectural details, and reproductions help guests understand how early State and County government impacted the lives of men, women, children, slaves, and free blacks 200 years ago. The State House faces The Green, a public area designated by William Penn in 1683. Group Tours
Group tour topics at the State House include “Governing a Changing Society” (interprets 1700’s African American society of the area), “By and For the People” (prominent individuals and the role of the State House), and for students, “Ghost Marks of the Past” (restoration and history of the State House), and “The Case of the Missing Mercantile Money” (role-play trial). The State House also offers programs about important trials and debates that took place there. Contact Delaware State Museums for a complete listing of Group Tour Programs. |
