American Heritage Tour
A Two-Day Tour in Central Delaware

Central Delaware is America at its Best! Many of the attractions and historic sites in Kent County have national and international significance.

Day One:Start your American Heritage Tour in downtown Dover, the capital of “The First State,” at the Biggs Museum of American Art, featuring 14 galleries of silver, furniture, paintings, and other traditional decorative arts from Delaware and Pennsylvania. Then walk one block to The Green, Dover’s town square laid out by William Penn, where the Declaration of Independence was read to the public, troops assembled to march off to the Revolutionary War, and where Delaware became “The First State” to ratify the United States Constitution. Tour the Old State House on The Green, the second-oldest state house in continuous use in America.

Enjoy lunch on your own in downtown Dover at one of the small café restaurants, and take time for some tax-free shopping at many gift shops and boutiques downtown. The downtown shopping district is only two blocks from The Green.

After lunch, it’s on to the Johnson Victrola Museum, three blocks away from the downtown shopping district. See and hear antique Victrola phonographs, with “Nipper” the dog. Company founder and inventor Eldridge Reeves Johnson was a native Delawarean, who left his mark on popular American culture. Next, travel a few miles to the John Dickinson Plantation south of Dover and learn about the “Penman of the Revolution,” and daily life on his colonial plantation. John Dickinson wrote many influential newspaper articles about unfair English taxes, debated whether the colonies should revolt, and was a framer and signer of the United States Constitution.

After checking into comfortable accommodations, enjoy a buffet dinner and evening entertainment at Dover Downs Slots in Dover or Midway Slots in Harrington. Both venues also offer the fastest live harness racing action in the country, on a seasonal basis.

Day Two: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your overnight accommodations or a local restaurant before travelling along the scenic Delaware Coastal Heritage Greenway to Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge features a five-mile auto tour route to allow visitors to conveniently observe migratory waterfowl and shorebirds within this important resting and feeding stop on the Atlantic Flyway. On your way in, stop at the refuge visitor center for information on the wildlife the area has to offer. While on the Refuge, visit the Allee House, a typical early colonial brick farmhouse still surrounded by miles of open space.

For lunch, break into the steamed crabs and other seafood delights at a local restaurant near the coast.

Travel back to the south side of Dover after lunch, for a guided tour of the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base. Over 20 vintage and veteran aircraft are housed inside and near an historic hangar on base. The museum is the official national museum for the Strategic Airlift Wing of the U.S. Air Force, and is home to the giant C-5 Galaxy cargo plane, the largest plane in the western hemisphere.
